Inthe early20th century (1907),abatch of purebred Karakul lambs was introduced to Namibia, marking the beginning of the local Swakara lamb breeding industry in Namibia. These lambs quickly adapted to thelocal desertclimate.Experiencedbreeders continuously improved the quality of the breeding varieties year by year through the development of breeding technologies, including professional breedingstandardsand conditions.Aftermore than 110 years of development, the Swakara breeding industry has become the pillar of the agricultural sector in the arid southern and western regions of Namibia.
ThemostdistinctivefeatureofSwakaralambfuris its curly guard hairs, which form a wave-like texture. The pelt surface is flat, smooth and delicate, with an excellent hand feel. The quality of Swakara pelts mainly depends on their shape, size and guard hairs.Breedersusuallyclassify thevarieties for breeding and pelting shortly after the lambs are born.
Swakara lamb fur has an extremely shiny texture, and its dense curly hairs form a unique wave pattern, making itundoubtedly favoredbydesigners andmanufacturers.
The natural colors of Swakara include black, gray, white, brown and spotted, with more than 200 variations in color shades.Taking gray pelts as an example, they can be extended into more than 5 different tones.
White Swakara lamb fur is extremely noble, with a color similar to natural milk white.Only a few thousand such pelts are available each year, making it the most sought-after and expensive pelt variety in the world market.
